To refill - Oil

The quantity of oil required is approximately _ pint (0.3 litres), see under "Recommended Lubricants" Section P.

The steering unit cannot be topped up or filled with oil while it is fitted to the car.

1. Remove the steering unit from the front suspension crossmember and steering arms, see under "Steering unit—To remove and refit".

2. Examine the convolute covers for damage and leaks; clean off all road dirt and tighten the bands of the cover at the opposite end to the pinion and the band on the track rod at the pinion end or renew the convolute covers as necessary, see under "Convolute covers — To remove and refit".

3. Remove the large end of the convolute cover from the body at the pinion end by slackening off the band and drain the oil into a drip tray.

4. Position the steering unit and track rods vertically, pinnion end upwards; refill the unit with the specified quantity of the recommended lubricant, see under "Recommended lubricants", Section P.

5. Fit the convolute cover to the body and tighten the band to give oil and weather tight joint.

6. Refit the steering unit and track rods to the front suspension cross-member and steering arms see under "Steering unit — To remove and refit".

7. Check the front wheel alignment, see under "Front wheel alignment — To adjust", in Section F.

CONVOLUTE COVERS

Description

The convolute covers, fitted over the inner ball joints, permit the lateral movement of the rack and the rise and fall of the two track rods.

When either or both of these covers are renewed it is necessary to remove the steering unit and track rods from the front suspension so the steering unit can be refilled with oil.

To remove and refit (Fig. 4)

1. Remove the steering unit and track rods from the front suspension cross member and steering arms, see under "Steering unit—To remove and refit".

2. Remove the two outer ball joints and locknuts from the ends of the track rods by releasing the lock nuts, all threads are right handed.

Remove the two convolute covers from the body and track rods by releasing the large and small bands respectively, trapping any escaping oil in a drip tray.

4. Refitting is the reverse of the removal sequence but particular attention must be given to the following: —.

(i) The band on the large end of the convolute cover at the pinion end is left slack until the steering unit has been filled with oil, see under "To refill— oil."

(ii) Refit the steering unit and track rods to the front suspension cross member and steering arms, see under "Steering unit—To remove and refit."

(iii) Check the front wheel alignment, see under "Front wheel alignment—To adjust " In Section F.

DAMPER PAD CLEARANCE

Damper pad clearance is set during initial assembly of the steering unit and should require no attention until the car has completed a considerable mileage.

The clearance is as follows: —
At pinion end 0.003 In. (0.07 mm)
0.020 In. (0.5 mm)
