GENERATOR

GENERATOR

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
(Refer to Figs. 2 and 3)

The D.C. generating system is a negative (earth) system and output is controlled by a voltage regulator which is connected between the armature and field; the field is earthed Internally.

The generator armature shaft is supported by per-manently-lubricated ball-bearings which fit Into the end plates and is keyed to an integral pulley and cooling fan assembly which is belt driven from the engine. The generator mounting is depicted in Fig. 2.

Polarizing generators

Normally, It is necessary to polarize a generator when it has been rebuilt or when new pole shoes have been installed. Generators are polarized during manufacture; therefore, enough residual magnetism remains to allow the generator to commence charging.
To polarize a rebuilt generator when fitted to an In-stalled engine, disconnect the field wire and the battery wire from the voltage regulator then, with the engine
switched OFF, momentarily connect the two wires to each other.
Never polarize a generator by any method that applies battery voltage to the field terminal of the voltage regulator, such as starting from the battery terminal of the voltage regulator, or by connecting a “jumper” lead directly from the battery to the generator field terminal. This action causes excessive current to flow from the battery and through the contacts of the voltage regulator to earth, thus burning the points.
