4. Remove windscreen washer bottle and bottle holder.

5. Remove generator.

6. Remove radiator fan cowl by taking out two top fixing screws and radiator lower fixing bolts.

Disconnect top and bottom water hoses at water pump and inlet manifold ends. Also disconnect hoses from cooling system header tank.

8. Remove fan blades and fan pulley, four AF bolts.

9. Remove radiator.

10. Remove generator mounting bracket.

11. Disconnect brake servo vacuum feed pipe at servo unit banjo union.

12. Disconnect heater hose at heater control valve.

13. Disconnect exhaust heat feed pipe at carburettor thermostat spring housing union and remove pipe by lifting its other end out of the exhaust manifold heat chamber.

14. Disconnect coil LT lead at coil SW terminal.

15. Disconnect HT leads at sparking plugs.

16. Disconnect fuel feed pipe at carburettor float chamber and move fuel filter and fuel pipe away from engine.

17. Disconnect water temperature unit lead at Lucar terminal in front of carburettor.

18. Disconnect vacuum feed pipe on distributor diaphragm unit.

19. Disconnect accelerator to throttle lever cable at carburettor throttle lever and cable abutment bracket.

20. Disconnect heater coolant return pipe.

21. Disconnect oil pressure gauge feed pipe at union below oil filter. Remove oil filter unit and its mounting bracket to allow-fitting of lifting bracket to left-hand cylinder head.

Bolt engine lifting brackets to front end of each cylinder head.
The right-hand bracket may need altering slightly.

. Disconnect steering unit. See Section J.

Remove crankshaft fan pulley. Three 9/16 in. AF bolts.

25. Raise front of car so that front hub centres are approximately 24 ins. (61 cms.) from the floor level and support as shown in Fig. 86. Remove front wheels and disconnect steering unit from steering arms and lift out steering unit.

26. Disconnect exhaust pipes at exhaust manifold joints and remove each front down pipe from its exhaust system.

Disconnect fuel pipe clip at starter bottom bolt.

28. Disconnect starter lead at starter terminal and loosen lead terminal on starter solenoid. Move lead clear from engine.

Disconnect heavy earth lead from gearbox bolt.

30. Unbolt clutch operating cylinders from clutch housing. Tie wire across the cylinder end to prevent the piston from coming out. Secure clutch operating cylinder with its fluid feed pipe well clear of engine.

31. Disconnect and remove speedometer cable. One 7/16in. AF bolt and clamp plate.

Mark propeller shaft flange to rear axle flange. Remove four propeller shaft flange bolts and remove propeller shaft.

Remove four screws holding gear lever surround to floor tunnel, and two 1/2 in. AF bolts holding gear lever to Its mounting. Lift off gear lever.

Support engine weight with lifting equipment and gear box weight with garage trolley jack.

Remove engine side mountings. Two 5/8in. and three 9/16in. AF bolts each side.

36.
Remove gearbox rear mounting. Two 3/4in. and four 9/16in. AF bolts.

37. Draw engine unit forward enough to bring gearbox extension out of body cruciform tunnel.

Lower jack to bring down gearbox end. Lift out engine unit.


ENGINE REPLACEMENT

This is a reversal of the removal procedure. The fuel pipe and rear brake fluid pipe pass through the body cruciform frame tunnel and these pipes should be inspected after replacing the engine to ensure that they have not been damaged.
Refit engine and gearbox with the correct grades of oil. Refit cooling system with the heater control valve in the HOT position. After running the engine re-check coolant level in the header tank.
